JOB TITLE: FACILITIES and SAFETY COORDINATOR for International Bird Rescue- Los Angeles Wildlife Center
International Bird Rescue is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that specializes in the rescue and rehabilitation of sick, injured and contaminated aquatic birds. Our mission is to inspire people to act towards balance with the natural world by rescuing waterbirds in crisis. Between our two wildlife centers in San Pedro and Fairfield, CA, we treat approximately 4,000 patients per year. We are currently looking for someone to join our team as a full-time Facilities and Safety Coordinator at our San Pedro center to help oversee maintenance, upkeep, and safety standards.
FUNCTION of Facilities and Safety Coordinator: To oversee all aspects of technical maintenance, repair, and overall upkeep of the Los Angeles wildlife center while incorporating OSHA standard safety practices. You will also work alongside management and rehabilitation staff to design and implement efficient work systems for wildlife, caging, and equipment. This position requires you to do maintenance work yourself and also manage vendors in projects outside our scope or too large to take on in-house. Responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing the company's Health and Safety Program.

Experience in basic general handiwork, including mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing, landscaping, and construction.
Proficient computer and writing skills to create reports and budgets. General knowledge of Google Suite and Box preferred.
Ability to work efficiently and calmly under emergency and stressful situations.
Ability to alternate between work in a team environment and independent work with minimum supervision.
Willingness to work flexible hours during emergency response situations, such as oil spills, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
Must have a valid U.S. driver's license.
High school diploma. Degree from a vocational school and professional certifications a plus.
Previous experience working in the non-profit sector or animal care facility a plus.

Must be able to complete a heavy workload within reasonably established time frames without fatigue.
Must be able to move and transport equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to safely operate various hand tools, power tools, and equipment used in the maintenance of the facility.
Must be able to work in challenging and changing environments indoors, outdoors, and in field situations, such as uneven surfaces, wet and slippery surfaces, and various weather conditions (hot, rainy, windy, etc.).
This position requires ascending/descending ladders and stairs (sometimes while carrying supplies, equipment, and tools) and positioning oneself into tight spaces, low areas, or on the ground to perform equipment repairs and facility maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Inspect, maintain, and repair building systems and equipment (heating and ventilation, water softener systems, pools, and related equipment, etc.).
Maintain a monthly list of facility maintenance requirements (filter replacements, soft water system recharging, etc.).
Assess and troubleshoot facility issues when professional help is not a readily available option.
Schedule periodic service visits as needed for systems requiring professional service.
Identify vendors and obtain estimates for service contracts, repairs, and equipment purchases.
Supervise outside contractors on any outsourced projects.
Help develop and manage the facility maintenance budget.
Fix and address facility and equipment problems while respecting and maintaining a budget.
Collaborate with management and rehabilitation staff to design and implement efficient work systems for wildlife, caging, and equipment.
Collaborate with animal care staff to develop methods that ensure cleanliness and organization as it pertains to facility function.
Monitor and maintain facility readiness for oil spill response in accordance with the organization's facilities agreements, including submission of monthly reports and attending quarterly meetings.
Work with external stakeholders in a professional, productive and efficient manner to update and resolve facility issues.
Maintain the facility's "Search and Collection" kits and keep them ready for any local oil spills or incidents.
Maintain online facilities documents, records, and reports.
Oversee the organization's OSHA compliance during both daily rehabilitation operations and wildlife emergency events.
Prepare written health and safety programs and policies, including the facilities Health and Safety Plan.
Identify safety training needs and develop and coordinate safety training programs and safety meetings.
Act as the safety officer during emergency events, such as oil spills.
Monitor and review injury, illness, and accident reports and worker's compensation claims.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Center Manager and Director of Operations.
This is a position in an animal care facility. While performing some duties of this position the employee is frequently exposed to odors, noise, a variety of wild birds, animal waste products, and hazardous material (such as petroleum products during an oil spill). There is a risk of potential exposure to zoonotic diseases. Appropriate protective clothing and training will be provided when required.
